Centenary Opening Sides

The Centenary season formally began with the traditional Sides match. To mark the occasion a new bell made by John Deakin was unveiled on the first hole, and the Captain, John and others gathered at 8.45am to "ring in" the new competition year. Deaks does bear an uncanny resemblance to Fred Dibnah in that cap !

A sight not seen at Alderley for many years is the Union flag, now flying behind the 9th green. And we have new Centenary flags on the pins as well.

The Captain's and President's match was won by the former, as was the overall match by 11 matches to 8.

New M.C. at the club is Rick Ford who arrived with a splendid new gavel, commissioned specially for the occasion.

Titleist provided a special pack of new ProVs for the Club Champion, greatfully received from Captain Glen by Bill Fisher. Talking of Bill, this was heard in the locker room the previous Sunday morning at 8.20am:

"Have you seen Bill practicing down by the ninth ? What's that about before Winter League ???"

"That's about him being Club Champion and us NOT being !"

Winter League winners the Davies / Price combo picked up their tankards.

Almost £700 was raised for the Juniors with a raffle and auction. Can we expect to see the team in matching cashmere sweaters this year ??

As ususal, a most enjoyable day which we hope sets the scene for a momentous year.
