Memorable Matches

The Crewe team who arrived at Alderley in March, 1984 was packed with County players and had, remarkably, won the previous 2 DunhamTrophy competitions. They hadn't anticipated quick, smooth greens, or a team that were to give them a real hiding. Ralph Brindle saw off the County Champion, Roy Smethhurst. This close match had Ralph's caddie, Colin Bowers, almost hyper-ventilating. Jerry Dixon beat former county match-play champion Peter Geddes, and Dave Mackey, Pete Fraser, Dave Austin and Brian Boughey also won. Poor Colin Burgess contrived to lose from dormie 2.
The report does not exaggerate the quality of the greens......is this the exception that proves the oft quoted rule that we "never have decent greens till early June" ?
The celebrations went on all afternoon and into the evening, and to be fair to Crewe, several of their players stayed with us.One error is the statement that we'd won the Dunham previously.......those who were at the 1975 final will not forget the agony of losing to Bolton Old on
a sudden death decider.
