Captain's weekend -24th/25th July 2021

Earlier in the week, the weather forecast was not good but, in the end, we had two days of good weather around some very competitive golf.

Day one had Matt Spiller beating Luke Taylor on a card countback.

Day one had additional prizes of Nearest the pin and Nearest the Line.

Martin Glenister made winning the Nearest The Pin very difficult to compete with by getting a Hole In One on the 6th. With the Hole In One, those in the clubhouse had a drink on Martin to celebrate a great shot.

Martin also popped his ball to approximately 3 inches from the line to win that as well.

Those that attended the evening were entertained by Carl the Magician who left quite a few people gobsmacked with his incredible tricks,

The Rascals played a range of songs which got some people dancing but it was not so loud as we could not enjoy each other’s company.

Additional entertainment was provided by Jake the Groundsman who is officially every one's best friend.

It was just like old times, a full bar of people having FUN and doing what Alderley Edge Golf Club does best SOCIALISING.

Day two was the business end of the weekend and was focused on the golf. It seems to be a tradition that the Ground staff make the course tougher than day one and looking at the scores it must have been, or maybe it was the odd hangover.

Andy Slater kept his own tradition going by being one of the last to leave the bar, but he proved to have a lot of stamina and shot a day winning net 70.

Unfortunately, Andy’s net 70 was beaten on a card countback by Richard Walker. Also beaten on a card countback was Gav Ely and Hansel Allen.

That meant we have a
- Day One Winner Matt Spiller
- Day Two winner Richard Walker

However, the winners of the days were not the overall winner, proof that consistency is a winning formula.

I am delighted to say Paul Finney has won the overall event.

A couple of years ago Paul proved himself to be an honest golfer when he called a penalty on himself which meant he was disqualified from a competition he had won. These are the qualities I think everyone at the club holds to be important which makes Paul an extremely worthy winner.

The top five aggregate results were very close -
Paul Finney 67 + 70 137
Richard Walker 68 + 70 138
Matt Spiller 65 + 74 139
David Lee 69 + 71 140
Jan Cichocki 68 + 72 140

The Professional’s Prize is next Saturday and with all the work Charles does for the club please support his day.

After the Professionals Prize, there will be a catch-up Presentation in the evening where we will celebrate the winners of the competitions to date.

Thank you again for making my Captain’s weekend a weekend to remember and I hope to see you all soon.

Newspaper coverage of the 54 hole Charity Challenge

This article featured in a recent Macclesfield Express, written by Geoff Garnett:

Great charity effort at Alderley Edge

ALDERLEY Edge Golf Club Captain Brian Pennington was delighted with the success of the 54-hole charity marathon he took part in with several members of the club.

Their aim was to raise funds for Brian’s chosen Captain’s charity of Mental Health  MIND, specifically for local and regional Mind, Stockport and District which supports our local area.

Brian said: “We achieved our target of completing 54 holes in about 12 hours with great support and encouragement from members and friends and the club staff to take the total raised so far to £7,500 for the event are still hoping to raise more.

“Suicide is still the biggest killer of men under 40 but it I not the young who feel it.

“My best friend’s father aged 96 committed suicide recently by hanging himself, it was so sad that such a fantastic man felt he had no way out but to kill himself.

“Not everyone needs support to take the final route, anyone can be impacted from children to the elderly, married and single, anyone, and as we come out of the pandemic the demand for the support MIND offers will grow.

”Anyone wishing to donate securely on the website
