President's Day was concluded at the third time of asking on Saturday in warmth more reminiscent of July and wet ground more typical of February. Conditions weren't easy with balls plugging deep into fairways and disappearing under leaves, contributing to a CSS of 69.
One man found conditions to his liking though. Gav Elly won by three shots with a stunning gross 72, net 62, including 12 pars and a birdie. Many congratulations to Gav.
Roy Parker came 2nd with nett 65, attracting an Exceptional Scoring adjustment bringing his handicap down to 14 and Steve Corfield took 3rd prize with a nett 66.
The President was received with acclamation at the Presentation. The Captain paid tribute to the excellent contribution the President has made over the last 2 years, especially his calming voice of experience & commonsense. You have a sense that some Presidents will be good, but its only with hindsight that you know whether they were great. I think we can all agree Dave has been a great President.
Simister on Saturday 21st October
The first round of the Simister Cup, which was abandoned on Saturday, will be replayed on Saturday 21st October. If for any reason, President's Day does not complete this Saturday, the 14th, it will be replayed on the 21st in place of the Simister.
The BRS entry sheet for the 21st has been re-published in threes instead of fours. Those who were already down to play have been re-entered, at nearly the same tee-times. I hope those who find themselves with different playing partners won't have too much objection. You should already have received e-mails with your revised times. Please let me know if it has created any issues.
Let's hope for some dry weeks to complete the season's programme.
Alzheimer's Society Charity Donation from AEGC Members
On Saturday 30th September, last year's Captain Pete Wood thanked all AEGC Members for their support, and Brian Foden for Organising yet another Charity Day. The club raised over £4,310 pounds which was donated to the Alzheimer's Society and Pete Wood was very pleased to present the cheque to Jo Hawkins from the Alzheimer's Society. Pictured are Mr Captain, Jo Hawkins, Pete and Mr President.
Monthly Medal Final
The Monthly Medal Final was played in atrocious weather conditions, standing water on the greens meant it was barely playable. It was remarkable that CSS stayed at 68. I'd just like to thank the Professional, Charles, for helping to ensure the competition completed by squeegying several greens around the course. He's done the same in several competitions recently, so many thanks again, Charles.
The winner of the Subsidiary Medal held on the same day was Andy Hogg, with 82-17=65.
in joint 3rd place in the Medal Final were Simon Edbury & Mike Troup with nett 69s. In 2nd place was Ian Pearce on a card play-off with 88-21=67.
The overall winner of the Monthly Medal Final was the immediate Past Captain, Pete Wood, also with 88-21=67.
Lady Captain's MacMillan Coffee Morning
Who doesnt like cake and coffee? Well Lady Captain Yvonne Grundy, does so she decided to hold a coffee morning to support her chosen Charity for 2017 - Macmillan Cancer Support.
Yvonne admits her self that asking people and local businesses for raffle prizes is rather out of her comfort zone but she was delighted to find that so many people were happy to support this worthy charity.
So today was the day and so many members and friends came up to the Club to support Yvonne, eat cake, drink coffee and buy from the stall holders. The raffle table was heavy with prizes and Amy who is the area manager for Macmillan joined the coffee morning and told us a little more about the charity and how much was raised last year. Amy was due at 7 coffee mornings so we were delighted she was able to join ours.
Lady Captain is delighted to announce that a massive £1040 was raised on the day.
She thanks everybody involved.
The format of Closing Sides hasn't changed for many years, only the quality of the jokes varies. This is a very popular event and the President & I hope it will be oversubscribed on the 28th October again this year. The entry sheet will be posted after the presentation of the Simister Cup 1st Round on Saturday 7th October. If you want to be sure of playing, that's the time to be there. No-one will be allowed to enter other names until all attendees at presentation have had an opportunity to get their names down. I'll look forward to seeing you then.
