Close, but no cigar........
An enthusiastic mixed team threw everything they had got at Davenport in the preliminary round of the Archie Preston. Played away, on a lovely sunny afternoon, it wasn't looking too promising, with Davenport securing three early wins against Alderley's one, (thanks Mr Vice and Celia!). However, the tension mounted as Alderley managed to draw level to three matches all and it fell on the last match to play to a result. Ronnie and Julie Ricketts gallantly played down the nineteenth with a following crowd but were eventually beaten by a spectacular lengthy curving putt from the opposition.
As ever, the match was played in a very social spirit, and despite the distraction of a football match (some sort of local derby?) the conversation flowed over the meal. We wish Davenport well in the competition and maybe next year we'll get a good run in this very enjoyable interclub competition!

The sign up poster for the first event of the season is up in the foyer. This is to be a team competition, any combination of players so either find a four-ball or just leave your name down and let others sign up around you!

Mixed Winter Wonder
Blessed by an extremely mild November day, and just enough light, the mixed section held its last event of the year. A good turn out enjoyed a nine hole better ball competition and winners were Olwen and Mike Davies, closely followed by Celia Berent and Mr Vice Captain Pete Woods in second place. Nearest the pin winners were Mo Monk and Mike Davies.
Mr Captain, John Deakin, ably assisted by Lady Captain Anne Thornber presented the prizes together for the last time, and the winners of the Barbara Ames Mixed Foursomes also received their trophies and prizes. Runners up were Rob Booth and Mo Monk, but the winners, after a closely fought final were Brian Foden and Lisa Burns. They will be put forward into next year's county Mixed Foursomes Competition as Alderley Edge Golf Club's representatives, so we wish them luck in advance!
Mixed Summer Awayday
Warmly and enthusiastically made welcome by the staff at Holywell, twenty eight hardy golfers braved the wind and the sheep to enjoy an afternoon of golf and a two course dinner, just for the fun of it. There were prizes galore, with Mr Vice's team coming out top (accompanied by LVC Celia Berent, Karen and Brian Pennington), with the Ricketts and Roberts' team coming in second. Collecting the best scores on the par threes prize was Team Thornber with Sandra Smith and Mark Walker. Nearest the pins were Graham Davies (with blow by blow detail of his achievement) and Keith Beckett.
It was a great day, very relaxed and good fun. Whilst there has been slow take up of the Sunday weekend informal competitions so far, perhaps those participating at this event will carry their enthusiasm into the next season and the Sunday mixed will become a really popular event?
