Mixed Summer Awayday

Warmly and enthusiastically made welcome by the staff at Holywell, twenty eight hardy golfers braved the wind and the sheep to enjoy an afternoon of golf and a two course dinner, just for the fun of it. There were prizes galore, with Mr Vice's team coming out top (accompanied by LVC Celia Berent, Karen and Brian Pennington), with the Ricketts and Roberts' team coming in second. Collecting the best scores on the par threes prize was Team Thornber with Sandra Smith and Mark Walker. Nearest the pins were Graham Davies (with blow by blow detail of his achievement) and Keith Beckett.

It was a great day, very relaxed and good fun. Whilst there has been slow take up of the Sunday weekend informal competitions so far, perhaps those participating at this event will carry their enthusiasm into the next season and the Sunday mixed will become a really popular event?

Centenary Trophy

A fine turn out of nearly sixty members competed for the honour of winning The Centenary Trophy, the summer mixed Major Board competition. Tales of close shaved putts and lost balls were shared in the spike bar, but one of the ladies obviously avoided too many of these to record a score of 39 points and come in as winner for her first Board Competition.

Congratulations to Julie Ricketts, who now sees her handicap drop by three shots! Second place went to Dave Lee with 37 points, who also went home a little richer due to having a two...well done Dave. Third place went to Tom Lawton, playing off scratch, with a creditable 37 points on a count back.

Thanks were extended to Lady President Jean Walker for effectively publicising the competition, the Professional, Charles Le Sueur for setting up the prize table and for Liz McGuire and Alison Roberts for doing the cards.

It was a shame that more participants did not come along to the presentation to support Mr Captain and congratulate the winners, however, Mr Captain appreciated the presence of those who were there!

The next mixed event is the informal Sunday competition on July 12th

So close...but out go AEGC from the Archie Preston

It was a close call, with the score in at three wins each, but it was Lymm with the happy face as the final fourball returned to the club house with the win for the visitors, making the result 4-3. All the matches were played in a very friendly but competitive manner, despite a few testing pin positions on the second and the seventh to keep us on our toes. Mr Captain was struggling with an injury and had brought in his proxy, Dave Lee, who along with Valerie Hornsby registered one of Alderley's wins, which John was very quick to claim as his own! It is a really enjoyable knockout competition to be a part of, and it is a shame that we won't be advancing further, but we wished Lymm every success in future rounds.

Thanks to Rob Booth and Jean Walker for their organisation and to Duncan, Matt and Jenny for serving us with a seam bustingly delicious carvery.

Sunday Informal Mixed

The first 'informal mixed' was held this Sunday and an enthusiastic group of twenty teed off in a 4BBB competition organised by the Professional. Deemed a great success, despite no twos, winners were Mr and Lady Vice Captains and Gwyn and Andy Holt with 82 points. The idea of these events in the future are for all-comers to sign up and Charles will make a draw for the teams - the competitions will be decided on the day to keep everyone on their toes! Please look out on the noticeboard in the foyer and on BRS for further details. Next informal event 31st May.

Archie Preston result

The Mixed Section braved very soggy conditions at Hazel Grove for the rescheduled Archie Preston match - and gave a spirited team performance to beat their opponents 4-3. Thanks Wendy Rule for your cake, obviously crucial in helping to get a positive result for Alderley Edge!

Spring Surprise, Sunday April 12th

The sign up sheets for this event are in the foyer, for 18 holes AmAm betterball stableford and a meal after where we will make the draw for the Barbara Ames Knockout. Please make sure if you wish to be in the Barbara Ames that you squeeze your name on the sheet - it is delightful to see so many names there already but don't miss out!

The closing date for sign up for the knockout will move forward to April 4th, Easter Saturday so everything can be prepared in good time for the following Sunday. Both ourselves and the Roberts are away on April 12th so we are appealing for another couple to step forward to run the Spring Surprise on the day. Thanks

Gwyn and Andy
