Gents Team win in the MDGA City Glass Foursomes

Alderley Edge Golf Club are through to the last 16 of the City Glass Foursomes, following a 5 to 2 victory away at Lowes Park from Bury.  This was undoubtedly a tricky tie, as our boys faced a quirky, tight 9 holer, with small ‘slopey’ greens, some punishing OB’s and several blind holes, a clear advantage to the home side.

The team got off to a promising start, Logan Stanyer ‘drilling’ his drive down the middle of the first fairway, despite having just parked his car moments earlier. He and skipper Alex Ridgway who were given a couple of shots, brought the first point home for the visitors 5 and 4.

There was another win for next up, Vice Captain Sean Hall and his partner Harry Sexton. Things were looking good, especially from the club’s newly erected decking with Bar, overlooking the signature par 3 8th/17th hole. Considering the forecast, it was a pleasant day to sit out, and for the visitors only going to get better.

There was a nervy wait for the third win however, both the Allen/Davies and Spiller/Willmot pairings having close but losing ties. Cometh the hour, the inspired Bob Anderson/Andy Marshall partnership, came in all smiles. Marshall put it down to the fact that they bamboozled the opposition, by doing the exact opposite of what their partner requested of them.

The penultimate pairing of Andy Slater and Richard Walker got a half, and as the visitors, a win ……..but were actually beaten to the club house by the last group. Debu’T’ees Tom Ricketts and Tony Griffin had secured their victory and the match on the 12th, finishing with two birdies.

Captain Alex Ridgway reflected ‘as good as the team was in winning, to be successful we are going to need a squad, where every member is part of that team. Lowes Park were excellent hosts, very competitive and gracious losers, a very enjoyable afternoon.’

The Club will not know its next opponents until 2nd June, the next round to be completed by the end of June.

Whilst we have a winning team, it is a small squad. Coming into the summer, holidays and family barbecues will be a factor.  We will be looking at competition results over the next few weeks, to give the squad a bit more depth.

If you are interested in joining the AEGC team please get in touch with Captain Alex Ridgway or Mike Harding
