An Autumn morning at AEGC

With these Autumn mornings turning colder, here are a selection of photos from one morning earlier this week. It started misty but soon cleared, as the sun came out, for a lovely morning for golf.

Tom Metcalfe joins the coaching team

Charles is very pleased to introduce Tom Metcalfe, PGA Professional, as a new member of the team.

“Over the last two months, we have seen incredible demand for membership and in turn, this has increased demand for lessons. Unfortunately, this means that I do not have the time needed to grow the Juniors section to the level it deserves. We now have 44 Junior members and I think it is important that we keep growing this to make it a strength of the Club.

I am pleased to announce that Tom Metcalfe, PGA Professional will be joining our team with immediate effect. Tom has been a professional for six years and is a Level 3 qualified PGA coach. His main focus will be junior coaching with the goal of building one of the best junior sections in the north-west.

Tom will be sending out information about the following areas over the next couple of weeks:

- Summer Camps
- Weekly Junior Lessons
- Junior Competitions

If you have any questions about junior lessons, know of anyone who may be interested in junior coaching or would like to contact Tom about his plans, please call him on 07969848446 or email tommetcalfegolf@gmail.com. “

Successful recruitment of members at AEGC

Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs website has recently featured Alderley Edge Golf Club (AEGC) in one of their articles highlighting the successful recruitment of 130 playing members and eight social members during lockdown.  Charles, our PGA Professional, spoke to Geoff Garnett and was able to explain some of the background to our success, outlining the very attractive membership options as well as a buddy scheme to help new members to integrate and help them gain handicaps if they wish.  The club’s very active marketing through email, social media and word of mouth has paid dividends.

250 Club Draw - Winners Announced!

The Trustees of the 250 Club are pleased to confirm that the 2nd draw of 2020, originally planned for the evening of the Gents Opening Sides, has now been completed. Brian Foden completed the draw in the Club Office with Barry Arnold filming and is delighted to announce the following winners:

1st Prize (£350): Andrew Boyle

2nd Prize (£175): Paul Gosling

3rd Prize: (£100): Mike Davies

4th Prize (£75): Barry Arnold

At present, we have 98 members in the 250 Club and new members are always welcome! Each number costs £5 per month, paid via direct debit, with forms available from the Club Office or click here: 250 Club Application Form. The 250 Club holds four draws a year with half of all proceeds going towards Club funds and the other half shared out in prizes. As examples, funds from the 250 Club have been used to cover the purchase of new patio furniture and a barbecue, as well as the provision of a grant to the Garden Committee for work behind the 4th green (currently in full bloom and many thanks to Drew Sutton). More recently, the 250 Club kindly covered the cost of sharpening blades on the club's triple mower and the purchase of two new heavy duty strimmers.

The 250 Club is a really great way of supporting in some small way the future of Alderley Edge Golf Club.

Trustee, 250 Club

AEGC re-opens - Saturday 16th May

Dear Members,

At 8.00am on Saturday 16th, I took on car park marshalling duties whilst Liz Gardner and Charles managed the 1st tee and course traffic. This is a way of golf that we need to get used to for a couple of weeks at least until we are sure that those that were using our course for routine exercise, in our absence, understand that we are back!!!

After my 2-hour stint in a Hi-Viz jacket and moving cones around, I was fortunate to play 9-holes and may I say that the course was looking superb. Ironic that we are now desperate for water given the wet winter we endured however, overall Les, Jon and Jake have done us proud in keeping the course to such a high standard even with restricted hours.

I have to say that your overwhelming support during this difficult and strange period has been fantastic. I hope you all understand that our decision to delay opening by a few days was based simply on a need for us to ensure all health and safety procedures could be applied. Without the efforts of Barry Arnold, Charles and Lady Vice Captain – Karen Pennington, the delay may have been longer. They have performed miracles and we should all be truly grateful for their dedication to the task. Charles continues to try and get his business back to normal, now taking bookings for outdoor lessons and actively manning the membership hotline. I am very pleased to report that we have had 24 new members since the golf ban was lifted on Wednesday. Let’s hope that continues and we see more new faces at the club. We are actively advertising membership packages on Facebook – please share if you can.

We will continue to work to get everyone back playing 18-holes, if they wish, ASAP and hope that the golf committees will implement competitive golf thereafter.

Enjoy the course and see you all soon,

Simon Barber

Chairman
